1.

Why do I have to take the general ability test?

The general ability test is a psychometric test that provides an indication of general intellectual aptitude that is not necessarily assessed in school examinations but which is important for academic performance. This information about your aptitude, together with other information such as academic information, CCA records, personal accomplishments and test/trial results will help the school to decide admission into the Raffles Programme.

2.

What does the general ability test entail?

The non-verbal test uses diagrams to measure reasoning and problem solving relatively independent of one's cultural or academic background. All information needed to solve each problem is presented within each diagram, so you do not have to depend on word or mathematical knowledge, or reading skills to answer the questions.

3.

Is it an IQ test?

The general ability test is not an IQ test. It is a psychometric test of nonverbal reasoning ability, which is an aspect of intelligence that is less affected by one's cultural and academic background.

4.

How long is the general ability test?

Including the briefing and instructions, the entire test session should take about 1 hour.

5.

How do I prepare for the test and what must I bring?

As the test is not meant to assess how much you have learnt in school, no special preparation or study is needed. However, just like any other test, it would be good if you are in a relatively relaxed but alert frame of mind, so try to get a good rest the night before the test. All you need for the test is a pencil and an eraser. In addition, please bring along a watch to keep time.

6.

How will my level of performance on the psychometric tests be determined?

For the general ability test, your performance is determined by comparing your score with the scores obtained by other applicants to RI, RGS and other integrated programme schools in Singapore. Additional information is provided by comparing you with students of your age in the United States.
